Bioluminescent Pier

Portencross Pier, North Ayrshire

Here on the west coast of Scotland we don’t really get a lot of bioluminescent plankton as some other places of the UK do, but we do get a lot of the krill that feed on the plankton in our shorelines, these blue dots in the sea surrounding Portencross, North Ayrshire are bioluminescent krill, small krill that leave a wave of bioluminescence behind them as the get startled or agitated by the lapping waves. You can see this happening with the naked eye on a calm summers evening when the water is relatively flat.
