Greenan Comet

C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) over Greenan Castle, Ayr on Thursday 17th October 2024

I went out on this night to try and capture the comet over a local landmark, and ended up down at Greenan Castle in South Ayrshire. since the comet is a period comet with a orbital period of 80,000 or so years this makes it a long-period comet and why it had been widely referred recently to as the ‘once in a lifetime comet’.

This is a stacked image of 81 frames, and for any fellow enthusiasts out there I’ve added the Exif data for the frames I captured to be able to capture the details of the comet coma, dust tail and Ion/gas tail.

20x light frames with a setting of (2s, ISO2500, 200mm @f/2.8 ),

20x Dark Frames (2s, ISO2500, 200mm @ f/2.8 (*Lens Cap On*)),

20x Bias Frames (1/4000s, ISO2500, 200mm @ f/2.8 ),

20x Flat Frames (1/80s ISO2500, 200mm @ f/2.8 (*Same Focus As Lights*),

1x Frame for the castle (30s, ISO200, 200mm @ f/2.8 ).

This images is stacked but not tracked as I was using my tracker with my other camera to get the failed timelapse that I posted yesterday.

So it's a 81 frame stack working in at around 32s exposure stacked in DSS (Deep Sky Stacker) and processed using AstroPanel v4.2
